Benefits

  • Above-average top line growth driven by high innovation and strong pricing power.
  • Higher operating margins on the back of high market share ("Champion in the niche") combined with good cost discipline.
  • Social responsibility, ethical behavior and keen environmental awareness are characteristic entrepreneurial values.
  • Multi-award-winning management team with a long and successful track record investing in owner-run firms.
  • Entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs – the Bellevue Group is itself an owner-run company with the majority of shares held by employees.

Risks

  • The fund actively invests in equities. Equities are subject to price fluctuations and so are also exposed to the risk of price losses.
  • The fund may invest a proportion of its assets in financial instruments that might under certain circumstances have a relatively low level of liquidity, which can in turn affect the fund’s liquidity.
  • The fund invests in foreign currencies, which means a corresponding degree of currency risk against the reference currency.
  • Succession planning poses an additional risk for owner-run companies.
  • The fund may engage in derivatives transactions. The increased opportunities gained come with an increased risk of losses.

European equities, as measured by the SXXR, rose 2% in February sustained by generally robust global macro data. The US job report revealed nonfarm payrolls increasing surprisingly strongly by 353000, while the ISM manufacturing reached a 15 month high, underpinning hopes for a soft landing. Inflation data disappointed, with core CPI above market expectations both in Europe and the US. This pushed out the expectation of rate cuts and send longterm rates further up. Encouragingly, PMIs in Europe confirmed an improving momentum. Though still in negative territory, the Eurozone flash PMI was up for the 4th consecutive month, registering 48.9 in February from 47.9 in January. Services stabilized after 6 months of deterioration, while manufacturing declined to 46.1, compared to the January 10-month high of 46.6. In term of sector performance, automobiles and parts (+13.1%), industrial goods and services (+6.8%) and consumer products and services (+6.2%) performed best while real estate (-7.7%), basic resources (-6.8%) and utilities (-5.6%) lagged the most.

Against this backdrop, the fund returned 2.3% (EUR / B shares), outperforming its benchmark by 30 bps.

Main detractors in the month were Alten (-5.6%), Roche (-8.2%) and Aker BP (-6.9%). Alten delivered 2023 results in line with expectations. For 2024 the revenue growth is expected to be “satisfactory” and profitability above 2023. While unsurprisingly not precise at the start of the year, the company initial guidance suggests another year of EPS growth above 10%. Alten is trading on less than 10x EBIT, close to historical trough, and 25% below its longterm average. Roche reported 4Q23 sales in line with 2H23 core EBIT 11% below expectations. Its 2024 target for MSD sales and core EPS growth was broadly in line and led to modest consensus reductions. Aker BP delivered stronger than expected Q4 EBITDA and FCF and the company proposed a higher than expected dividend of USD 2.4, a 10% yield. The outlook was however disappointing, with a 2024 production guidance of 410-440kboepd, ca 5% below expectations.

Top 3 contributors in the month were BESI (+19.6%), Prysmian (+12.3%) and Sopra Steria (+8.7%). BESI Q4 results confirmed once again its best in class profitability, with a strong 37% EBIT margin despite revenues being close to a cyclical trough. Also, BESI’s hybrid bonding technology is gradually taking off. Prysmian reported a FY23 EBITDA growth of 9%, including strong results from its transmission division – underpinned by the tailwinds of electrification and renewables megatrends – and weaker telecom earnings. The EBITDA 2024 guidance of EUR 1.625 bn at the mid-point led to ca 5% consensus upgrade. With a backlog of EUR 18 bn, the 2027 EBITDA target of EUR 2 bn seems well within reach. Sopra Steria delivered strong 2023 results, marked by best in class organic growth of 6.6% and 50 bps margin improvement, beating both expectations and the company guidance. Sopra also announced the disposal of its banking software business, a welcome operation that will reduce the company risk profile and crystallize value.

After the blue chip run of the last 2.5 years with the STOXX50 TR returning 33% vs STOXX600 TR +17% and MSCI EUROPE MID 0%, we feel 2024 could shape up differently. Taking a closer look at GRANOLAS is also revealing as the performance of the past 12 months is anything but homogeneous. While Novo Nordisk, ASML and SAP returned between 60% and 85%, for half the constituents performance was SD or negative. If trees can grow into the sky, reversion to mean tells you it can not do so forever. A new inflation and interest regime should help diminish the valuation and performance gap between mid caps and blue chips. For 2024 we hang on to our mid cap bias and stay diversified across styles. We stick to the global infrastructure capex cycle theme we identified back in 2022 and avoid indebted companies. Too much leverage today compromises a company’s ability to invest in its future development and competitivity. In this new area of scarce resources, AI and deglobalization to name a few, challenges and opportunities are abundant. The universe of listed mid caps offers plenty of opportunities with attractive multiples as they already discount a severe macro melt down.

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and can be misleading. As the sub-fund is denominated in a currency that may differ than an investor’s base currency, changes in the rate of exchange may have an adverse effect on prices and incomes. Performance is shown net of fees and expenses for the relevant share class over the reference period. All performance figures reflect the reinvestment of dividends and do not take into account the commissions and costs incurred on the issue and redemption of shares, if any. Individual costs are not taken into account and would have a negative impact on the performance. With an investment amount of EUR 1,000 over an investment period of five years, the investment result in the first year would be reduced by the front-end load of up to EUR 50 (5%) as well as by additional individual custody charges. In subsequent years, the investment result would also be reduced by the individual custody account costs incurred. The reference benchmark of this class is used for performance comparison purposes only (dividend reinvested). No benchmark is directly identical to a sub-fund, thus the performance of a benchmark is not a reliable indicator of future performance of the sub-fund it is compared to. There can be no assurance that a return will be achieved or that a substantial loss of capital will not be incurred. All figures in base currency in %, calculated by the total return / BVI method.Show moreShow less
